MARKET TRENDS
JD Power's Mobility Confidence Index remains at 39 out of 100 as consumer skepticism continues to slow autonomous vehicle adoption
25 Jun 2026

Consumer trust in autonomous vehicles has flatlined at a critically low level even as public awareness of the technology continues to climb. Trust is not following awareness. JD Power's 2026 Mobility Confidence Index remains at 39 out of 100, while 61 percent of consumers report being afraid to ride in an autonomous vehicle. The findings suggest that familiarity alone is doing little to encourage adoption.
A closer look at the data reveals the commercial challenge. Forty-three percent of respondents believe autonomous trucks are less safe than human-driven alternatives, a perception with serious implications for freight and logistics firms investing in the technology. JD Power stated directly that "consumer awareness of AVs is rising, but trust remains low, limiting near-term demand for autonomous vehicle sales or services."
Research from Thatcham adds another layer to the picture. Sixty-seven percent of drivers surveyed in June 2026 identified accident reduction as the biggest potential benefit of self-driving technology. Yet 58 percent say they will wait until the technology proves itself before using it. Consumers recognise the promise. They remain unconvinced by the evidence available today.
For automotive retailers, insurers and fleet operators, that distinction reshapes the strategic problem. The obstacle is no longer awareness but confidence built on demonstrated safety. Marketing alone is unlikely to close that gap. Companies investing in autonomous services will instead need transparent reporting, credible real-world safety records and consistent public communication.
Credibility, not capability, now looks like the industry's scarcest asset. Thatcham's findings suggest consumers are prepared to wait rather than take manufacturers at their word. Until years of reliable performance accumulate, trust is likely to remain the slowest part of the autonomous driving transition.
